Sound problem
Both my friend and I are using Linksys PAP2 and voxalot accounts.
If my friend calls me, he can hear me but I cannot hear him. However, if I call my friend, both of us can hear each other. What is the problem? Thank you for your help. Last edited by mykr2005; 02-06-2009 at 02:04 PM. |

Probably this is a problem we all had to deal with at one time or another.
One way audio is very often an NAT/firewall issue. If you cannot hear him when he calls, it is more likely that your network is blocking incoming traffic than your friend's network blocking outgoing traffic. Can you both successfully run the echo test test [*600]? Check your PAP2 settings against the ones posted in the wiki : Setting up Linksys PAP2 - Voxalot FAQ If your set-up is correct and you still have the problem, please post back. |

I set up the two PAP2 boxes exactly following the procedure posted in the wiki.
[*600] echo test on my side was successful. Each PAP2 box supports two telephone lines. Line 1 is configured on a Voxalot account and line 2 is configured on a Voipstunt account. I did a test. Here are the results: .....My friend......................Me ........................Results...... Line 1 (Voxalot) -----> Line 1 (Voxalot) ........ The sound problem Line 1 (Voxalot) -----> Line 2 (Voipstunt) ..... No problem Line 2 (Voipstunt) ---> Line 1 (Voxalot) ........ No problem Line 2 (Voipstunt) ---> Line 2 (Voipstunt) ..... No problem Line 1 (Voxalot) <----- Line 1 (Voxalot) ........ No problem Line 1 (Voxalot) <----- Line 2 (Voipstunt) ..... No problem Line 2 (Voipstunt) <--- Line 1 (Voxalot) ........ No problem Line 2 (Voipstunt) <--- Line 2 (Voipstunt) ..... No problem The problem occurs only when my friend uses his Voxalot account to call my Voxalot account. Could you please post some more information on your network configuration.
Is there a router ahead of the PAP2 or does the PAP2 have a public IP address ? What Router model ? What type of network are the PAP2s on ? What SIP / RTP are you using for Lines 1 and 2 ? Are you using a STUN Server in the PAP2 configuration ? Have you tried removing the STUN server and setting the "Symmetric NAT handling" to Yes on the Voxalot Member Details page ? Is it possible to try to switch the the location of the PAP2s to see if the propblem stay with the location or with the PAP2s ? Incidentally, how do you call from Voxalot to the Voipstunt line ? Is Voipstunt set up as a VSP in your Voxalot account ? Just some ideas to try and to look into ...... |

Hello mykr2005,
Make sure that whatever is in "Proxy:" you have also copied that into "Outbound Proxy:". Set both "Use Outbound Proxy:" and "Use OB Proxy In Dialog:" to yes. From each ATA you can call this SIP address: *0@proxy01.sipphone.com You can put that SIP address into one of the speed dial settings in order to dial it. Does it say "you are behind a SIP compatible router" ? Many such audio problems are due to mis-configured NAT settings. You should try my NAT traversal recipe, which is slightly different than the wiki. See below. (under SIP tab) Handle_VIA_received: yes Handle_VIA_rport: yes Insert_VIA_received: yes Insert_VIA_rport: yes Substitute_VIA_Addr: yes Send_Resp_To_Src_Port: yes STUN_Enable: yes STUN_Test_Enable: yes STUN_Server: stun.voxalot.com:3478 (or any STUN server such as 'stun01.sipphone.com:3478' or 'stun.sipgate.net:10000') NAT_Keep_Alive_Intvl: 179 (if your phone does not always ring on incoming calls try 119 or 59, use highest number that works) (under Line_1 and Line_2 (or PSTN_Line) tabs) NAT_Mapping_Enable: yes NAT_Keep_Alive_Enable: yes NAT_Keep_Alive_Msg: 0000 NAT_Keep_Alive_Dest: $PROXY Register Expires: 3600 ---------- Optional settings, steps 1 - 4: Sometimes its preferable to operate the ATA independently of a STUN server. The benefit is that phone service can continue no matter if the STUN server is working. See steps 1 to 4 below. 1. Forward the SIP ports and the RTP port range from the router to the ATA. 2. Set "STUN Enable:" no 3. Set "NAT Keep Alive Enable:" no 4. The ATA must learn it's public IP address, either through normal SIP registration, or place your public IP address in the 'EXT IP:' field). Hi Kurun and Boatman,
Many thanks for your help. However, my friend is about 200 miles away from where I am living now. He knows nothing about internet and voip technology. It is impossible to change the settings of his PAP2 now, but I can change the settings of his Voxalot account. I am now wondering whether I can solve the problem by changing the settings of his Voxalot account. The Voipstunt accounts are working, so I think the Voxalot accounts should be working as well. ========================================= (1) "Is there a router ahead of the PAP2 or does the PAP2 have a public IP address ?" Yes, there is a reouter ahead of the PAP2. (2) "What Router model ?" Linksys WRT54G (3) "What type of network are the PAP2s on ?" I am on Virgin ADSL broadband via the BT network. My friend is using the network of his university. (4) "What SIP / RTP are you using for Lines 1 and 2 ? Are you using a STUN Server in the PAP2 configuration ?" I set up the two PAP2 boxes exactly following the procedure posted in the wiki: Setting up Linksys PAP2 - Voxalot FAQ Setting up Linksys PAP2 - Voxalot FAQ (5) "Have you tried removing the STUN server and setting the "Symmetric NAT handling" to Yes on the Voxalot Member Details page ?" Yes, I have. (6) "Incidentally, how do you call from Voxalot to the Voipstunt line ? Is Voipstunt set up as a VSP in your Voxalot account ?" Yes, Voipstunt is set up as a VSP in my Voxalot account. I call my Voipstunt line from Voxalot by calling SIP address: my-username@sip.voipstunt.com Quote:

The ideal solution here would be to:
-Assign your friend's PAP2 a static internal IP in the WRT54GL router based on the PAP2s MAC address (it'll be better if the router is running DDWRT or Tomato instead of stock Linksys Firmware) -Perform port forwarding (take a look at http://forum.voxalot.com/voxalot-sup...html#post13585 for suggested ports) -Set up his PAP2 as boatman notes above (you'll note that in the Wiki there is the suggestion to move over to Option 2 for STUN settings if Option 1 presents audio issues) I understand that may be to much work to do though... -One thing I'd attempt is to have your friend call *010<Your 6 digit VoXalot> number.... what happens with Audio then... (this forces the call over the SipBroker network) -My last worry, since you mention your friend is behind a University network is if there is restrictions by his connection there (take a look at http://forum.voxalot.com/voxalot-sup...rver-side.html)... That said though, the fact that things work well when you call him makes this possibility doubtful... |
