In regards to Majo's problem:

Rather than limiting BrainTel with just G729, enter this list of codecs ulaw;alaw;g726;g729;ilbc;gsm in your VSP registration details in VoXalot....

From personal experience VoXalot is pretty good at negotiating with the server when it has more choice (let, or at least try to let VoXalot and the provider resolve codecs between them). Also if possible, do not limit your ATA to just G711, but rather set this as the preferred codec.

As for Ansher's problem, in summary:

Case 1: Acanac Supports G711>>VoXalot Set Up for G711>>ATA Set up for G729 (Problem with the Call, won't go through, VoXalot seems to prefer G711)
Case 2: Acanac Supports G729>>VoXalot Setup for G729>>ATA set up for G729 (Problem with call)

It looks like the ATA and VoXalot prefer to negotiate G711 among them....

I am not well versed in Codec negotiation, but again set your string in VoXalot as follows: ulaw;alaw;g726;g729;ilbc;gsm and then set G729 as the preference on your ATA, and see if anything changes....

One major issue in this case is Acanac, have you managed to make a call with them through VoXalot (or at least do you have all the right User/Pass Proxy server info that you have at least tested to be working on an ATA).....There is a question mark of whether even if you get everything right, you can manage to place a call through VoXalot via ACANAC.

I realize I didn't help much, but just some background and a few things to try...

Point taken, but the reason for this whole exercise is to provide my relatives in Ukraine with access to VOIP. The Internet in Ukraine could be better, bandwidth is very limited, costly, restricted and does not handle G711 well.

As you may have noticed, that wasn't all...just took me a while to type the rest...

Whereas Majo, wants G711, you want to avoid it.....

Martin can speak better to the issue of codec negotiation...

My suggestion: Do not limit VoXalot (set codecs as above), but do limit your ATA in this case and see if things improve...

My other suggestion: Unless you've already paid for ACANAC for a full year, send a simpler/reliable service back home....

Thanks for your reply. I have let my ATA to choose the codec automatically and when I make a call through Voxalot with Acanac VSP I get G.711u connection and it works OK. *600 (Voxalot) works fine with either G.711u or G.729a (depending from ATA setup).

I will follow your advise and will have string in VoXalot as follows: ulaw;alaw;g726;g729;ilbc;gsm . Will report the progress.

Andriy.
