Best Server for China? (Voxalot)

Hi, I have a friend in China that I am setting up a VoXaLot for and we are finding that she can hear me good from Australia, but her audio breaks up.

I am assuming that it is because the server is not close enough to her?

I have tried both the eu.voxalot.com and au.voxalot.com servers. But still the sme problem. Her audio drops out constantly.

Any idea's for a fix?

I think voice break-up is more usually caused by her upload speed being too low. Ask her to run a broadband speed test if possible. At least 80kpbs is required BOTH up and down. If she can hear you OK it means her download is speed OK and your upload speed is OK, but not the reverse. The only solution is to change ISP (internet provider). But you can also try using other codecs that use less bandwidth. Start by excluding G711 from the list. Search for codecs in the Voxalot forum for more info.

I think being too far from the server causes echo and can be tested by dialing 600 (or *600) through Voxalot. She should hear her own voice almost immediately when she says something.

OK, Here are her results. She is in Shanghai and has very good & fast internet and a new Samsung Centrino laptop running XP and X-lite soft phone.

2019k down, 467k up.. Not bad!

Better than my speeds! Should be no problem. Did you try the echo test? You can also test latency by pinging the au.voxalot server from Shanghai. See if it gives consistent results. After that I'm out of ideas, so over to experts...

I just noticed you said audio drops out as well as breaks up. The firewall might be an issue. I'm not sure how to set it up though.

One more thing. In speedtest, ask her to select the Brisbane server. Maybe the ISP is fast within China but slower externally? Just an idea.

OK, She did the echo test *600

She said it was very clear and nice.

But every time we ring each other it is still broken audio.

Also I notice other things

She is using X-Lite software. I am using a Billion 6404VGP ATA.

If I ring any X-Lite phone the connection always drops out within a few seconds of connecting.

This happens with other people also.

If I ring her Mobile or House phone with my Pennytel accoutn, it is very good.

So the problem is definatly her end.

I have her using the AU server already.

Got me beat.

I mean try to use the Aussie server for the speed test (rather than Shanghai one).

I used to have a similar problem with not with voxalot.

It turned out to be my old non-QOS compliant router. just after some minutes the voice broke and come back again and broke.... > that took me 6 months to realise unfortunatelly...Buying a new router solve dthe issue.

try to connect directly without a router.

Perhaps will work pershaps it wont. A friend also had a similar problem (not with voxalot but with other voip service) and it turned out to be an old ADSL modem. When he changed it all came to normal.

And last but not least, it used to happen to me with voxalot before they opened the EU server. All was solved after the EU server was opened. (but i live in Europe). Now it is perfect.

My point is that it could be many things. If your Equiment is relatively new and supports QoS then the issue is more tricky
