Probably a 3G connection is needed. I have not tried voice over GPRS, but I did try voice over EDGE and result was not so good. The EDGE connection was fine for inbound audio but outbound audio sounded broken.

hi mate,
i m really looking into use a mobile phone to recive inbound calls from voxalot. not thinking about outbound. so EDGE wud be fine in this case.. isnt it..|?? can i do this with my normal mobile handset..??/ shud i have special features in my mobile package. tks |
Every duplex call has an inbound side and an outbound side. With EDGE the other party could not hear me well, but I could hear them OK. I don't have any advice about handsets, I did the tests with a Linksys WRT54G3G-AT router.

Well, as I mentioned earlier, I don't have any advice about handsets because my experience is with mobile routers, not handsets. Here is a brief summary about connecting with a mobile router and data card.
To connect Internet using a mobile router you would need a router such as a Linksys WRT54G3G-AT which is a model for AT&T. Then you need a compatible data card such as the Sierra Wireless AC881, also for AT&T, but if you get the unlocked version you can use it with any GSM carrier. Not all GSM carriers have 3G coverage. Then you need a mobile phone sim card with a data plan. Then you put the sim card into the data card, put the data card into the WRT54G3G-AT router, and you have an Internet connection. The WRT54G3G-AT has WiFi as well as the usual 4-port Ethernet switch, so you can easily connect computers to it. You could also tether a computer to a mobile phone, either directly through the computers usb port, or using a Cradlepoint router such as model CTR350. |
