Default Echo Test - a bit LOUD?!

I find the Voxalot echo test (reached by dialing 600), which may very well be the FWD echo test (*393613# by Sipbroker), is set much too loud in comparison to the SIP providers I use to connect with the PSTN. It would be nice if the echo test ran at roughly the same volume as the average call-in/call-out provider so that settings that meant a good echo test call would make for a good PSTN call. As it is, the input/output gains would be totally different to get the volume to the appropriate levels.

The VoXaLot echo test is the one that comes bundled with Asterisk. The only way we can really change this is to re-record the underlying audio.

It is different to the FWD 613 echo test. I'm curious if this is loud for you also?

To me they both sound set at the same overly-loud volume level. That is to say, it appears overly-loud to me when I have my ATA configured so that my phone calls thru Voxee (my main outbound carrier) sound at a normal volume. I am curious if other people find the echo test loud (or their VOIP carriers too quiet) or if this is more a problem with Voxee than it is with the Asterisk echo test.

I find PAP2 ATA's a little louder than than I am comfortable with. If you're using a PAP2, you can change the audio levels on the REGIONAL tab. I reduce the 'FXS Port Output Gain:' from -3 to -6. 'FXS Port Input Gain:' will affect how loud others hear you.

Technically I already have been manipulating the input and output gains for volume control, and I just notice a sharp disparity between the volume of Voxee and SipPhone/GizmoProject and the volume of the Voxee and FWD echo tests. i.e. holding volume (gain) constant, either normal calls will sound too quiet or the echo tests will sound too loud. However I do think there is a range of volume between each provider, since Voxee is the quietest, then Gizmo, then Voxalot and finally FWD is the loudest and most distorted when played at a gain appropriate for Voxee. Strange huh?
