connected, but no sound
My daughter set up xlite on her computer. She has a voxalot.com account. She can dial 600 successfully.
I then dialed her number, right after she set up her account. After a slight delay, I was redirected to her voice mail. She dialed my number, and we both showed connection. Neither of us could hear the other, or our own voices. When she called, I clicked the green phone icon, but no response. She then redialed, we connected, and I clicked the line, but no response. What are the steps that might let me troubleshoot this problem? |

This first thing to do is temporarily bypass any routers you both may have by connecting your PC (if using a softphone) or ATA directly to your modem. If this corrects your audio problems, you most likely have NAT issues in one or both routers.

connected but no sound
Ron: OK.
I'm on a home desktop, hooked to Qwest DSL modem, and my daughter's on a home desktop, hooked to Sprint DSL modem. We both have used xlite to do the NAT check, and show STUN server?? operating as NAT?? (not sure I said that right). |

I'm not sure what you're saying. If both of you are using a softphone (Xlite) on your PC's and neither of you are using a router (your PC's are connected directly to your modems), then there is no NAT involved and no STUN server should be in use (STUN is a method by which a device behind a NAT router can determine the kind of NAT being performed as well as your public IP address). In other words, if you're not using routers, there can't be any NAT issues to deal with and there is no need for STUN.
Just to clarify, can you both successfully dial 600 when registered to VoXaLot and have your speech echoed back to you properly? If so, can you also connect to the voicemail server at 500 and successfully login using your password? If so, try running a test with FWD's echo server by dialing *393613. Ron |

Most ADSL mdoems, do NAT unless the connection is made via USB instead of Ethernet.

connected but no sound
Ron: You're right. I checked the xlite setup, and it shows no STUN server, and a secondary STUN server setting for xten.com.
Both computers now have FC5 installed, and xlite softphone. We both have DSL service. We both have voxalot.com numbers, and both have successfully run audio tuning procedure. We both can dial 600 and 500 successfully. I can dial Heather's number and after slight delay, be routed to her voice mailbox. She is then notified by email, and can successfully retrieve voice mail. Her account was set up less than an hour, prior to trying to connect. Heather can dial my SIP number, and my computer shows incoming call. That's where we get into trouble. So, I call her number, and am redirected to her voicemail. She calls my number, and we connect, but no sound at my end, and she says she doesn't hear anything at her end. tompoe,
It's good that you posted the SIP trace information. I'm not familiar enough with the low-level details of the SIP protocol to analyze it, but I'm betting it will be very helpful to Martin when he gets a chance to study this thread. The data center where voxalot.com resides was down quite a while this afternoon and I think I've been seeing some lingering problems with the SIP server since it came back up. The testing you're doing to try and resolve your problem may be being clouded by these other issues. I know Martin is currently analyzing the situation and working to iron out any remaining issues, so you might want to go slow until the dust settles and he can chime in on your particular case. Ron |

connected but no sound
Ron: Yahoo! That's good new . . . . uh, well, . . . . uh, oh, OK.
Tomorrow, I'll try again. Earlier, it occurred to me there might be a possibility that we needed to give a day or so, for the voxalot.com database to be updated for calls to be recognized with new accounts. If there were issues going on earlier, that would certainly, as you say, cloud the troubleshooting. Will see what happens, and let you know. |
