I have not used Fring, but have read in detail about it as I am also looking for a suitable softphone for a WM device.
You need to give them your phone number which essentially becomes your userID into the Fring system. (ie this implies to me that all calls are routed through the Fring network). A lot of people do not like to give their mobile phone number as they are worried about call back charges (advertising etc).
The other disadvantage of this is that if you use multiple sims (ie for different countries) then your Fring will not work with those other sims as your account is linked to the phone number you registered with.
I am looking at the WM version of Express Talk and intend to use this when I get around to buying a dopod d810.
You might also want to consider using the Express Talk WM version
