There are now 4 options, all of which achieve similar results, but at different costs and qualities: 1. Receive Calls from Around the World through a local number: VoXalot, MySipSwitch,PhoneGnome (Cost: Free) 2. Receive Calls from Around the World through a local number: VoXalot, PBXes, TPad, MySipSwitch, PhoneGnome (Cost: Free) 3. Receive Calls from Around the World through a local number: VoXalot & PhoneGnome (Cost: $15 after July 16th) 4.Receive Calls from Around the World through a local number: PhoneGnome and GTalk2Voip (Cost: Free) 5.Receive Calls from Around the World through a local number: PhoneGnome, VoXalot, PBXes.com (Cost: Free) Commentary: There is two things two consider with each setup (in my opinion), reliability and voice quality. The next best one is the current number (1), quality is rather good, and it is free. Making VoIP Calls from your regular PSTN Phone 1. Personally I would suggest paying with PayPal, and funding the PayPal payment with a credit card (giving yourself at least two dispute resolution possibilities, PayPal and your CC company, while avoiding having your credit card charged continuously) Voip Networks/Free Hosted PBX Systems 1.VoXaLot: (Voxalot - Home) VoXalot can be best described as a service aggregator. In a few words they let you put multiple services together, to create a custom VSP. They are not just a PBX, but rather a network on their own... Free VoXBasic Service includes:
VoXPremium adds the following extra features:
They also provide the SIPBroker service with 200+ donated access numbers around the world to call Voxalot and over 2000+ other SIP based VoIP Networks (millions of VoIP users) for free... They are associated with (but do not run) the only ENum service open to the end-user, e164.org 2.PBXes(www.pbxes.com) They provide a hosted Asterisk based PBX service. Their interface remains faithful to the Asterisk interface in general, although it is much more user friendly. Their services include: PBXes Free: The Free account notable limits are a 10 GB usage, and 2 simultaneous calls, with a 60 min cutoff, and the unability to post in the support forums. PBXes Premium: Includes a full on PBX including among others Fax as EMail,a full AutoAttendant and Que system, and CallBack access to your Trunks PBXes Pro: Is geared towards businesses, providing a hosted PBX which can be customized for various clients, including much of the same features as the Premium acct. For a breakdown and description see: https://www4.pbxes.com/iptel_details_e.html 3.MySipSwitch (SIP Switch : Use multiple VoIP providers with one SIP phone) MySipSwitch is a PBX service concerned solely with Call Routing. In avoiding the hadling of the actual audio stream their application runs much lighter. It is currently an R&D base being run by two technicians and sponsored by BlueFace.ie It provides the following fetaures:
Their service is new, and the interface is a bit raw, but their outlook looks promising, and used in conjuction with other PBX services, can contribute to a solid VoIP arrangement... For more info see: MySIPSwitch Community Forums :: View topic - How to Use MySipSwitch 4. LiberaILVoip (Partiamo con Libera il VoIP) Their website is in italian. They provide the following services:
5. GTalk2Voip (Voice-over-IP gateway for Google Talk, MSN and Yahoo Users) -Used in conjuction with MSN, Yahoo, GoogleTalk messengers -You create an account by simply entering your email in the home page -service@gtalk2voip.com (or something similar) adds you as a friend. -Open a Convo and type: MYPAGE -Click on the link for your account page -To CALL type commands on convo with service@gtalk2voip.com : SIP URI: Code:
CALL user@provider.com If email is username@hotmail.com then type Code:
CALL username_at_hotmail.com@msn.gtalk2voip.com then type Code:
CALL username_at_msn.com@msn.gtalk2voip.com If email is username@gmail.com then type: Code:

CALL username_at_yahoo.com@yahoo.gtalk2voip.com Type: Code:
CALL 14161112323 PSTN calls are not free, but you can now add your own providers to GTalk2Voip, and the call will be routed through them. Otherwise GTalk2Voip routes through its own providers and requires you have a balance -When calling someone for the first time using the commands above, chances are it will not go through, but they will receive a notice that service@gtalk2voip.com has added them as a friend, if they accept, the second time you try they will receive a call from service@gtalk2voip.com -This works much smoother in GoogleTalk, rather than MSN (have not tested with Yahoo) -They assign you a number *018xxxxx, that can be reached by dialing SipBroker Access Number + *018xxxxx or *018xxxxx@sipbroker.com (SIP URI calling), in all this cases you'll receive a call on your MSN/Yahoo/GTalk messenger -You can also get a DID number, forward it to *018xxxxx@sipbroker.com, and your MSN/GTALK/YAHOO messenger will ring when someone calls you -There is a generic Voicemail if you don't pick up, or you can forward to a SIP URI and receive calls to your current provider -You can use them to IM people not using same messenger (Voice-over-IP gateway for Google Talk, MSN and Yahoo Users) -You can create your own WebCall button (it calls you via Voip, plus uses one of your providers to call the other party and connect you together, if someone enter an actual number though, you will end up paying for the call, but at VoIP rates) (Voice-over-IP gateway for Google Talk, MSN and Yahoo Users) -In Summary, neat to play around with. It is a raw framework for now, not very user friendly, but looks promising. VoIP Networks/Other FWD: Free World Dialup (FWD | Home) ***FWD is now subscription based*** -Free Calling between Members on their Network -Can be used with their SoftPhone/Other SoftPhones/ VoIP adapter -IM other FWD members, SIP-Users, AIM/MSN/Yahoo/GTalk/Skype/ICQ (FWD | Help) -Call other Voip Users on other networks -Receive Calls from PSTN using access numbers (only 2 numbers really) -VoiceMail -They plan to be offering paid FWDout/FWDin service soon -From personal testing the FWD Communicator, and adding IM contacts from other networks is glitchy. Gizmo Project/ SipPhone (Gizmo – A free phone for your computer / SIPphone - Call worldwide over your Internet connection with any phone) -Use with their SoftPhone/Others/Voip Adapter -More aimed at putting together IM and Voip -Free Calls to other members -You are assigned a 1-745 number (only valid within Gizmo, not from outside) -Can get a free 775 area code PSTN nummber (but requires a credit card and US adress) -Gizmo All Calls Free plan (Gizmo – A free phone for your computer - Help) If you have a friend that you regularly call or chat on Gizmo, once in a while when he/she is not on you can call their cell/home number for free. Both of you have to have Active status for All Calls Free -Claims to let you message and call MSN/GoogleTalk/Yahoo/AIM/Jabber/SIP users (this works some times and not others; from my experimenting MSN is the most problematic) -Is offering paid Outgoing Minutes/Incoming Numbers TPad (Tpad - The Global Phone Network) -Free calls to other TPad users -Use SoftPhone/Voip Adapter -Gotta pay for outgoing calls to real numbers -Can receive calls from other Users, or by someone dialing Access Numbers + TPad number -Includes Voicemail Service -The biggest plus is their access numbers in countries where it is commonly hard to find one. -Mentioned in the WorkAround above for local calls to your Cell/Home from around the world Feel free to make suggestions, comments or anything else you think may be useful. I will try to correct mistakes, and keep things updated. Hey guys, check the original RFD thread for some updates, and an easier to follow WorkAround

Also, the other thing to keep in mind is that it seems VoXalot is going premium, so the forwarding service the Workaround is using will not be free after July 16

VoXaLot.. Going .. Going.. GOne. :(

I use 4 VoXaLot accounts. One for each of my ATA ports. One permidently forwarded to my externally hosted conference line, and one for a WiFi/SIP enabled mobile that I plan to get. There is no way I can justify US$100 a year to have VoXpremium for all 4 accounts. So now I am looking for alternatives. - I need to be able to forward for free externally one sipbroker prefixed number to my conference line. - register with my VSP for incomming's from my DID. - Support SipBroker codes locally here when dialing. - Enum support. Looks like I will have to start from scratch again with my local VoIP setup. It's a shame I only just got it all exactly how I wanted too. :( .-.-. |
i didnt register phonegnome when i added it as provider if that's what you mean. phonegnome voicemail is off.

In PhoneGnome: -Under Features your Remote Calls is active and checked to ring both Home and SoftGnome (press Edit to get here) -In the same page under SIP Settings are the ettings you should be using in VoXalot. -In the HomePage of your PhoneGnome account, note how your number appears (better yet keep that page open) In VoXalot: -In Member Details leave everything as is, except deactivating VoiceMail -In Providers, add PhoneGnome under providers setting Active and Register to No, and Codecs to ulaw;alaw;g726;g729;ilbc;gsm -Under Call Forward, leave everything as is, choose phone number, then enter the phone you registered in phonegnome. Try first just the number,no country code, no spaces, no dashes. If that doesn't work try Country code + Number, or the way someone within your country would dial your number to call you. Naturally the provider for the forward is PhoneGnome. Now Dialing: Call one of the SipBroker PSTN Numbers. After it says welcome etc. enter *010123456 (where 123456 is your VoXalot Number). If still having problems, the way to troubleshoot is check in PhoneGnome under Call Summary, Placed Calls and see if anything is being dialed, and how it's being dialed. Hope it helps... BTW, explain a bit more how GrandCentral comes into the mix for you. From all my testing I have not been able to combine GrandCentral or PhoneGnome.... |
it says...."dialing via local telephone service"..."failed to place call using local telephone service"
|
The number you are dialing has to be the same as the number you registered with PhoneGnome.
In other words, it's like your PhoneGnome Account for let's say 515-233-2332 is calling 15152332332.... In your PhoneGnome Account, under call analysis, see the format that is being dialed right now....than adjust as needed BTW, this may help: WorldWide Local Calls Also check the original RFD thread for some updates.... |
Very useful information, thanks for that.
I'd like to add uknumber.co.uk - Giving you a free UK phone number - wherever you are in the world! which gives you a free 056 number in the UK. The advantage over 084x, 087x, 070 is that 056 numbers are supposed to be charged at standard landline rates for the calling party in the U.K. (I say "supposed to" as this is the way it should work in theory, but it depends on the provider). |
If anyone wants to check at the original RFD thread, there is now a way to use VoXalot in Conjuction with PBXes that makes callthru possible...
One could replace adding each Voip Provider at PBXes (as mentioned in the guide), with just adding your VoXalot account where you have dial plans configured. In other words you can achieve CallThrough with SipBroker--VoXalot Acct(One Set up just for CallThru)--PBXes--VoXalot Account You use for all your Calling with Smart Call Configured And even add TPad, so you can use their access Numbers for places where SipBroker does not offer local numbers. Free DID Numbers, Free Voip Calls, & more Voip Info - RedFlagDeals.com Forums Placing VoIP Calls from any Old Regular PSTN Phone |
As bpere says above
056 numbers are supposed to be charged at standard landline rates for the calling party in the U.K. (I say "supposed to" as this is the way it should work in theory, but it depends on the provider). I have just obtained an 056 number from: uknumber.co.uk - Giving you a free UK phone number - wherever you are in the world! Tell all your friends and family to use a BT line (domestic /residential /business NOT a payphone)when using an 056 prefixed number and then they will get "standard landline rates" which are 3.25pence for up to 60 min plus 6p call setup charge You can check with BT's online price list here BT Price List |
I just created a new number at uknumber.co.uk and I am finding that whenever it calls successfully, it goes straight to voicemail.
I think this may be because I forwarded it to: voxalot-id@voxalot.com - instead of voxalot-id@au.voxalot.com I have sent an email to them to have the sip uri adjusted. |
btw I am finding that it seems to be a bit hit and miss as to whether the number works or not.
Optus prepaid mobile [AU], sometimes works, other times says that the number is disconnected. Three mobile fails, MNF fails call. Not sure if this one will work out, but this is all fun and good for testing / research purposes. |
Now I can't get the UKNUMBER to work from the Optus mobile again... but it worked on MNF.
The sip uri fwd was changed, now it doesn't go straight to voicemail any more -- so that is good. Edit: corrected SIPNUMBER to UKNUMBER... |
I'll make this topic a sticky, as it contains a lot of useful information.

I had added New Information , and i will add more emoci :)

Update, free peer calls, Integrater SuperSIPBroker Peering, and more, Much More!
Moderator: Feel free to delete if you feel this is too commercial, however it is on topic.
We were once very involved with the Voxalot and SIPBroker communities. Unfortunately, lately we have not had much time, however we have been working diligently on our systems to make many improvements. We now offer: Integrated SipBroker Peering, so any working Voxalot SIPBroker code is DIRECTLY dialable. (Limited to accounts with a SuperDID) Integrated SuperPeering which Means some of those codes that are not accessible from SIPBroker, work from our system. Some examples, Net2Phone, Broadvoice, Packet8 and more all using the same SIPBroker codes you already know! (Limited to accounts with a SuperDID) SPECIAL OFFER FOR SIPBROKER USERS For those with their own DID direct able to an IP address, you can now direct your own DID to us in e.164 format and we will deliver that DID to your SuperNetTel account, just $1.00 per month. This will make your DID a Full SuperDID including integrated SuperSIPBroker Peering on your account, with voice mail, as well as an OPEN SIP URI so you can direct calls via SIPBroker or any other method. Use the above features with your SIP or h.323 device, including even a SIP URI for that older, abandoned h.323 device that makes a lousy doorstop anyway. Yes you will even get an open SIP address on your h.323 device, and SIP Peering. If you have an h.323 hardware device we want to make you a special offer, so please contact us via our web page, and indicate your needs, and device model. We have some of the best retail rates to the Americas, and the highest quality available. GrandCentral to VoXaLot
I am not sure if this has been captured before, but I use Grandcentral, with a DID in the USA, to call my VoXaLot account by using an IPKall number. I have set up my Grandcentral account so that when my DID rings it is set to call my "home" phone number which is an IPKall number, which is directed to my VoXaLot SIP number.

I also tried to forward Grandcentral -> Gizmo -> Voxalot, but even though the phone rings, the call ends up going to Grandcentral voicemail. |
i tried this using the following credentials,

i just tried to get mediaring to work with SIP and can't get it to work. they may have changed things after the voipguides post got out. i do not think that they like the idea of people using SIP devices.

Does PhoneGnome/Voxalot work in Australia?
Just wondering whether this combo actually works in Australia or not?
Most of the user setup guides do not mention Australia?? I have been trying this since yesterday & followed the user guides exactly but I have had no joy in getting a call through. As suggested I have tried my home # in different formats i.e. with & without dialing codes, but still nothing. PhoneGnome shows calling records but no calls actually make it through to my home phone. I even tried the combination using MySipSwitch as well with no luck. Any advice appreciated:( |

Australia 61 All Except 1, 4, 5, 71, 89100, 89101 See: Qualifying International Numbers That said, there has been an issue for the last few days getting PhoneGnome to accomplish the forwarding....SipBroker times out at about 30sec whereas it seems PhoneGnome is taking 40-42 secs before setting up the call..... (I can confirm this is affecting the MySipSwitch and PBXes setup, have not tested with VoXalot Call Forwarding, but Using VoXalot to call with PhoneGnome works fine, even though it takes about 40 sec before you hear any ringing) At this point, it is a waiting game, waiting for PhoneGnome to resolve their issues/speed up their call setup process |
The number I am dialing does fit into the supported number range.
I tried it again tonight using just Voxalot & PhoneGnome, used the #'s in all formats with no joy, just an engaged tone with the phone not ringing. Tried the MySipSwitch combo & this time I actually get the recorded voice saying free call & dialing the local # but then I get the engaged tone & the phone again not ringing.. |
A little bit of news, or at least something to try:
Receiving your SIP Calls in Skype: Sip2Skype: Receiving SIP Calls in Skype |
Interesting reading, but I don't use Skpe and am fundamentally against Skype in my views for a number of reasons. However, if there was no risk of lacking enough channels, I'm sure it could be a worthwhile option for many.

Camundanet is not in the list.
It provides break-in numbers, as an alternative to SIP Broker, for example in Mexico where numbers listed in the SIP Broker site are totally useless. I have never tried, but they also allow to call toll free numbers in Argentina. |
Gizmo to mysipswitch to Phonegnome?
Hi all,
I was able to set up mysipswitch to forward gizmo coming call to phonegnome. The next day I try a gain but the call did not go through. Look like the gizmo incoming is fine but when it forward to phonegnome there is a problem (I'm not sure what it is but look at the call log I see the status is 487 and the response is RequestTerminated). Please give advice on how to fix this problem. Thanks |
Quote:
There is a quick fix by getting a VoXalot Acct. to play middleman such that MySipSwitch uses VoXalot to forward rather than PG directly (and PG is setup within VoXalot) Feel free to send me a PM if you are still having trouble with this... |
Quote:
I'll try VoXalot route. By the way, do you know if I can still connect my Asterisk server to PG?. I found a post back in 2006 but not sure if it is still workable. I'm just playing with VOIP for a month or so. I need to do a lot reading and searching. |
Quote:
Secondly, I have had no issues with PG registrations in general (ATA, VoXalot, MySipSwitch, PBXes) so I don't see why asterisk wouldn't work.....the settings are the same as the one's for the SoftPhone.........in general their model is pretty neat (if just their box was priced a little lower) |
