Bad signal quality with Voxalot and others (Grandcentral, IPKall, Gizmo)

Hi everybody,

Thanks in advance for the support :D. It is wonderful to have a community so willing to help.

The problem is that the quality of my calls is not good at all :(. They are usually broken. Especially people on the other side, cannot hear me well.

This is my current configuration:

Income :
Grandcentral -> IPKall -> Voxalot -> My voip phone

Outgoing:
Grandcentral -> IPKall -> Voxalot -> My voip phone (call from the site)
or My voip phone->Voxalot->VoipDiscount

The hardware that I am using is a Fonera with DD-wrt v24 RC2 (the newer versions are not stable for me).
I had prioritized the QoS for my VOIP phone MAC address and also the sip protocol has been prioritized.
I tried to reduce the outgoing bandwidth in QoS from 512k to 486k without any improvement:(.

The echo test *600 is (usually) good but not always.

I tried to set Symmetric NAT Handling to 'No' and then I had no audio.

I have tried to replace IPKall with Gizmo as bridge between Grandcentral and voxalot forwarding the calls to my number xxxxxx@us.voxalot.com:
Grandcentral -> Gizmo -> Voxalot -> My voip phone

but if I try to initialize the call from Grandcentral, my voip phone rings but when I answer there is no audio.

May it be a codec problem? How do I solve it?

Best,
Cris

This sounds like a NAT issue... maybe we can try to walk through it:

1. What Device or SoftPhone are you using to make and receive calls?

2. In DDWRT:
-Enable UPnP
-Open and Forward port 5060 to the IP (private IP) of the Device/SoftPhone placing calls
-Open and forward the RTP port range for your device to your devices IP (the RTP port range used will vary based on what Device/Phone you're using eg. for a PAP2 this is 16300-16500)
-If possible set up STUN on your VoIP device

Hi emoci,

Thanks for your answer.

What do you think is the problem with the NAT?
Are you talking about the quality problem or the absence of audio with Gizmo?
I suppose you talk about Gizmo.

Regarding your questions:
1- Telecom Italia Aladino Wifi (Samsung WIP-6000)
2 - Done. According the internal menu, it look like the RTP is only port 8000
3 - My phone doesn't use a STUN server.

However I wonder how can a NAT problem since voxalot is always the server connected to my phone. If it works with IPKall, why should not it work with Gizmo too ?

I tried to do what you said but I didn't see any improvement.

Best,
Cris

Do you have any other suggestions?

Ok,

First things first (I re-read what you posted above):

Is this working fine for both incoming and outgoing:
Grandcentral -> IPKall -> Voxalot -> My voip phone

There has been trouble with Gizmo and GC for a while... especially when it comes to accepting a call (pressing 1 doesn't seem to work for example)...

I originally assumed that you were also running into trouble even when using IPKall (hence my suggestions above)... if it is just Gizmo though, there isn't much to do

When gizmo call me there is no audio. I cannot hear the message that says to press 1.

Do you know any other ways that I can use to improve the quality of the voice conversation?

Hmm,

The usual trick to audio problems is:

-UPnP and opening specific ports in the router
-STUN server in the device

Don't know much more about the WIP-6000

My only other concern: Is there a chance that this is a device specific issue, do you experience the same problem if you were, say, using a SoftPhone?
