Using Voxalot with G.723

Hi,

I have a colleague with a ZyXEL modem that has been "customised" by the ISP so that it only has G.711 and G.723 codecs. One of the providers he wants to use has the G.729 codec, but not the G.723 codec. The G.723 works but only for calls made to or from other users using their system. As soon as you try and call outside or to normal PSTN numbers, everything locks up as the provider insists on G.729 as the codec.

I am trying to find some options for him and one is Voxalot. The question is "will it be possible to use Voxalot to make calls to PSTN numbers with a dial plan or will the requirement for G.729 be somethng that will stop things working?".

Thanks.

Yes it is, Voxalot will transcode the audio to/from one codec to another. ie. g723<->g729

Unfortunately things did not work out. For some reason the "customised" ZyXEL would connect, but there was very bad echo. Then after about 10 seconds, the call would freeze and then the ZyXEL had to be powered down for a few minutes before things would get working again.

It could well be an issue with the "customising" carried out by his ISP, but after a few dozen attempts, we decided to give things away as it was starting to cost a little too much.

It's a pity as we really wanted to get things working.

For your information, we were using au.voxalot.com

One of our U.S. servers did not have the g723 codec installed. I have raised this with telephony support and it will be resolved within the next day or two.

Does not need to cost you anything if you do your testing using *600. Once it works with *600 then you can perform actual call tests.

Same thing at my side. I have set-up VoipBuster to use G.711a in my VoXaLot account, but when I set my VoIP device to use G.726, it still uses G.711a at my side, or it will just simply refuse to establish the call when I force my device to use G.726.
